Budget Blown!

Well the spirit of giving has come close to ruining our Christmas budget.

I went over by:

$25 on my father-in-law

$20 on my step-mother-in-law

$20 on my sister-in-law and her family (I forgot to factor shipping costs in)

$20 on my mother

and with 5 days to go I still have 3 gifts to sort out for my Dad and brothers and figure out what to make for my husband (we are making each other’s gifts this year).

Hopefully everything will balance out with our food and tree portion of the budget.  We only have a few things left to buy for Christmas dinner, broccoli, carrots, parsnips, potatoes and a good ol’ box of stove top stuffing!  And perhaps we should put up a tree with only a few days left…hmmmmm…I’m sure there are deals out there somewhere for one!

In other news, I am returning to work on January 4, and as much as I hate leaving BooBoo earlier than I need to, I am looking forward to the extra income, some resemblance of a routine, and some more bonding time for Han Solo and BooBoo.

Still waiting on the money that Han Solo’s benefits to kick in.  Thank goodness for his side hustle!  Which I suppose is more like the primary hustle these days.  Fingers crossed we get a big fat back pay cheque soon!

The Christmas Tree Preoccupation?

Today I have not been sooo preoccupied with my debt.  Not that I am becoming “more zen” or seeing any great results.  Perhaps I am coming to peace with it?

Nope.

Today I just happen to have something that is weighing on my mind more than debt (and baby and sleep and work).  Christmas.  Booboo’s first gift arrived in the mail today and we don’t have a tree to put it under.  I may not get a tree tomorrow but my mother-in-law is coming over to help look after booboo and I am going to get some decorations up and dig out our little felt tree to put the solo gift under.

We may not have much to put under the tree but that should not stop us from celebrating and decorating.  And today I realized that until that package arrived, that was exactly what I was letting happen.

Christmas DIY meets TheDebtPreoccupation (aka Let’s Try This Again!)

Hello again!  While I am not feeling particularly well rested, I am at least awake enough for a proper post.  Now this is not going to be the helpful, insightful, or educational as I had hoped when I started this blog.  I will get there – just not today!

After getting all motivated and inspired by Anna Newell Jones’ DIY gift guide I went through many of the crafty design blogs that she referenced.  This is what I have come up with for my family so far:

My Mother-in-law:  She makes one batch of coffee every morning in her french press and then heats it up through the day.  Though the french press cozy probably won’t change her life at all, I know that she will love that I took the time to make something for her.  Double bonus that I don’t have to see inside her french press when we go to visit! Ha! The snag with this is that I have to learn to knit to be able to make it, a task which is proving to be quite difficult.  Thankfully I have access to YouTube and my mother.  Though my brother (the spendy one) has been joking that my mother will be the one that ends up making this thing (he may not be far off).

My Mother:  I hate getting gifts for my mother.  She would much rather tell everyone what to get her because left to our own devices we all, inevitably, get it wrong.  She’s not bitchy about it, but it does suck.  Anyhow, she LOVES stamps.  And postcards.  A LOT!  I have not had much luck trying to find her a proper stamp collecting book or a catalog for her to appraise her stamps.  Plus I could never make anything to do her collection justice (she has stamps from around the world that were received by her grandfather), so that leaves the postcards. I have been thinking about a large board, like 4′ X 6′ covered in filler, than covered with a cheap and cheerful material.  Then covered again with criss crossing ribbon.  That way she can showcase her postcards without damaging them and rotate them around easily (I do not want to think about how many she has).  This DIY could be a tad pricey so we’ll have to see if it is worth seeing through.

My Brother (the spendy one): He travels for work and for his girlfriend so when I saw this travel/carry-on book thing on design sponge I thought of him.  I am not sure I can willingly damage a book so this project might be better in theory than reality.  (I went looking for sweaters for the french press cozy and while they were all really cheap, $3 or less, they all looked to be in too good a shape for me to rip apart!  I just felt to guilty…)

My Brother (the thrifty one):  Now my thrifty brother travels a lot too and is planning a big Europe trip next year so he may get a travel book as well, but not until his trip.  This is because I am regifting a really cool gift to him this year rather than giving him a DIY gift.  I can’t think of a name for it and apparently the store that I got it from doesn’t sell them anymore, so I’ll have to post a picture here later.  To loosely describe it, it’s a neat Japanese art drawing kit thing.

My Dad:  CDs.  Plain and Simple.  He has a bunch ob burned CDs that won’t play on his CD player and it’s driving him nuts.  So I will rip them and burn them for him to actually enjoy.  He probably “stole” them from the library anyway – by stole I mean rip, but you get it – you’re blogging right?

My Sister-in-law and her family:  Rum balls.  I don’t make them with much rum, but they love them and my father and step-mother-in-law are going to visit them for Christmas so I will send some up with them.

My Father-in-law and Step-Mother-In-Law:  Well, they, like my sister-in-law and her hubby, aren’t the big DIY types.  My father-in-law is getting a calendar for his birthday (shortly after Christmas) with pictures of his grandchildren.  As for my step-mother-in-law?  Or the pair of them for Christmas?  I have no idea.  I was thinking baked goods, but they are traveling so it would be a waste.  So I’ll have to keep thinking there.

Okay, this post is sounding way too much like one I made the other day.  I promise I will add pictures and spruce this up a bit more and in general, just do better tomorrow!

Thanks for baring with me?  I think?

Spending Fast Meets Christmas Gift Shopping

Today was my first proper day of Christmas gift shopping.  I managed to buy 1 gift and talk myself out the gift I had asked my parents for (a new pair of nike + sneakers – turns out there is an adapter for the piece that sits in the shoe and my sneakers were still in pretty good shape so no need for new ones!).  Out of our $400 budget here is how we have done so far:

Total for Sister-in-law’s family:  $117.58 ($2.42 under budget!)

Total for Father-in-law’s family:  $ 51.75 to date (budget $80, 1 gift to go)

Total for Mother-in-Law: $0 ($40 budget)

My side (2 parents, 2 brothers): $60 to date (budget $180, 4 gifts to go)

Grand Total:  $229.33

$170.67 and 6 gifts to go

Christmas addition:  A small loaf pan that I will bake some “extra” presents with.  Purchased with 40% off coupon at Michael’s for less than $12!

I’ll be keeping a close eye on these totals while we try to get some baking done and complete our shopping!

Hope everyone has kept to their spending fasts/budgets for the holidays so far!

Winter is coming

With Christmas on the way Han Solo (my husband’s alias for this blog — his request) and I are in full on budget mode.  We have $500 from a yard sale and some serious kijiji hustling.

We have budgeted $100 for a tree and for Christmas dinner, which we will host.

Then we added up our family members, we have 4 on my side, 6 on Han’s side so that works out to $40 per person if we ignore each other and our daughter.

We also have a birthday between now and Christmas as well.

So, how are we going to make this work?

Well, for the birthday gift I worked swagbucks.com like you wouldn’t believe in order to get two $5 amazon.ca gift cards which reduces the cost of the gift I’m looking to buy from $25 to $15.

We are buying “couples” gifts as much as we can in the hopes of spending about $50 per couple rather than $80.  We have warned people about this ahead of time (the whole family is aware to a certain extent of how broke we are).

And lately we have been putting Han Solo’s photography hobby to work and will be framing photos to give to everyone in an attempt to “beef up” their gift.  This will cost us nothing as we have lot’s of frames in our basement not being used as well after simply registering with the photo lab for costco we receive 60 free prints! Score!

It’s early days yet so we’ll see how this all comes together!
